The Society of Mangalore - Africa Mission (SMAM)

The Society of Mangalore - Africa Mission (SMAM) is a faith-based nonprofit organization operating in the Mwanga District of Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Established in 2013 by Rev. Fr. Alwyn M. J. D'Souza, SMAM serves nine target villages, focusing on socio-economic, educational, healthcare, and spiritual development. The mission was inspired by the Diocese of Mangalore, India, as an extension of their gratitude for past missionary work. SMAM aims to uplift the underprivileged in rural Tanzania, particularly addressing the high poverty rates and dependence on agriculture.

SMAM's mandate covers four key areas: pastoral-spiritual, socio-economic development, education, and healthcare. In the socio-economic sector, the mission has implemented cooperative savings programs, solar light distribution, and housing projects for the poor. It also established the St. Joseph Sustainable Organic Farm to train farmers and youth in organic farming and rural technologies. Educational initiatives include running St. Joseph Boys' Science Secondary School, holiday tuition classes for local students, and scholarship programs. The organization also established the RUPERT Children’s Home for students from distant areas, providing a supportive environment for their education.

In healthcare, SMAM provides medical aid through annual health checkups, malaria medication, and eye care programs. The mission has also supported the community through COVID-19 awareness campaigns and sanitary pad distribution for girls. Pastoral and spiritual activities are a core aspect of the mission, with the church offering sacraments, faith formation, and catechism in local schools. SMAM continues to expand its services, including future plans for medical facilities, organic farming training, and enhancing the spiritual life of its members.
